Eight Tips To Get Your Home Ready For The Spring Season
The first full day of spring is March 21st this year, and that means spring-cleaning time is here! Getting your home ready for a change in season can seem like a big task, but taking the right steps to maintain a healthy living environment is worth it. Read on for plenty of tips and pointers that will leave you feeling great about yourself AND your home.
Clear Gutters
With April showers on the way it’s important to make sure your gutters are clear of debris and your downspouts are at least 5 feet away from the foundation walls of your home. Use a ladder to safely reach your gutters, but if you’re uncomfortable doing so, call a pro who can handle this job in less than a day.
Replace Both Air and Water Filters
It’s important to replace your filters every 3 months to ensure your home is being filled with clean air and your water is being properly treated. Air filters on your returns and inside of your heating and cooling devices should be replaced to make sure your HVAC system runs efficiently.
Test Smoke Alarms
This should be done multiple times a year, but when you are doing other chores around the house, checking the batteries on all your alarms is never a bad idea! Replace batteries and test the unit again to make sure it is functioning properly.
Prepare the Garden
Healthy garden soil leads to healthy crops, so make sure you loosen and fertilize before planting your spring flowers or summer vegetables. Be sure to select the proper fertilizer for your particular needs. Some fertilizers may not be suitable for houses with small children or pets that play in the yard.
Service the AC
Don’t wait until you need it, make sure your air conditioning units are working properly before the hot weather arrives. This will save you time, money and LOADS of frustration come time for those summer heat waves!
Clean the Windows
You won’t realize how much filth builds up on the windows during winter before you clean them! If using a ladder to clean the exteriors, make sure the ladder is properly secured. Don’t hesitate to call in the professionals here if you’d rather skip the ladder.
Repair Roof Damage
The winter storms put strain on your roofing, so now is a great time to check for damage. While you’re up there remove any fallen branches and perform a visual inspection around any edges. Be sure to take note of any areas that may need to be checked again before the fall.
De-clutter
One of the least fun, but most vital parts of spring-cleaning is to purge your home of anything you collected during the winter months that you just don’t need! Donate unwanted items to your local thrift store (some will even come to you to pick them up!) or have a yard sale. Less clutter in your house means less clutter in your life.
